
Recently, as the opening article of its current issue, the article "Did trade liberalization with China influence US elections?” co-authored by Che Yi, a specially-appointed researcher of the Department of Economics, School of Business, Lu Yi, Professor at Tsinghua University, Dr. Justin R. Pierce from the Federal Reserve System, Peter K. Schott, Professor at Yale University, and Tao Zhigang, Professor at Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business was published in the Journal of International Economics, a top journal of international economics.
In the article, the influence of Sino-US trade on election voting and legislators' roll-call vote in the United States is discussed. Empirical results show that voters in areas more exposed to trade liberalization with China in 2000 subsequently shift their support toward Democrats, relative to the 1990s, though this boost for Democrats wanes after the rise of the Tea Party in 2020.

Che Yi holds a doctorate from the Faculty of Business and Economics (Strategic and International Business), University of Hong Kong. Once served as an associate professor and doctoral supervisor in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, he is currently a specially-appointed researcher (Senior Title) in the Department of Economics, ECUST School of Business. He has presided over two projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Shanghai Pujiang Talent Plan and won the Youth Achievement Award of the 8th Outstanding Achievement Award for Scientific Research in Higher Education Institutions (Humanities and Social Sciences) of the Ministry of Education. His articles have been published in journals such as Journal of International Economics, Journal of International Business Studies, and Economic Journal. His main research fields are international trade and strategic management.
